Alaska Outsiders: Buddy

After moving from Seward to Anchorage, I was surprised by the number of homeless people he saw on the streets. Curious how they survive, especially the cold Alaskan winters, I started talking to them. Kent was his first on camera interview done on December 22, 2012.

Alaska Outsiders: Buck

If you think it's tough to be homeless in Alaska during the harsh, cold winters, imagine also being deaf and legless. "Buck" as he is known talks to Nate about how he lost his legs, how he lost his hearing and how legal and financial problems contributed to his situation.

Alaska Outsiders: Avelin

My second day of filming was on December 30, 2012. I talked to at least five people that day, all homeless, all with a different story to tell. Avelin here is an Ivory Carver from Savoonga, Alaska.

If you or someone you know speaks Yupik, we'd love a translation!

Alaska Oustiders: Gerri & Travis

Some of these interviews are hard to watch, and this is one of them. This was shot late night on Valentines Day in 2013. Many of the people living on the streets struggle with substance abuse. They are generally candid about their addictions and know they need help, but the path to sobriety isn't necessarily obvious or easy.

Alaska Outsiders

During the winter of 2013 I ventured into the streets of Anchorage to get to know Alaskans living outside year round in freezing temperatures.

Oral History; Robert Stroud was born and raised in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He grew up dirt poor but worked hard and fulfilled his dream of opening a store on NLR Main Street. His gift of gab has talked his way through a life of adventure. He hustled kids for marbles, delivered pharmaceuticals on his bicycle, served in WWII, danced with Betty Davis, and advised President Bill Clinton on how stay looking so young. His highest achievement is fathering six children with the love of his life.
